How AI is transforming shopping centre marketing

At Mustard Seed, we’ve always believed great retail experiences start with understanding people, not just pixels. In 2026, artificial intelligence has become one of the most powerful tools we use to do exactly that for shopping centres. It’s no longer a shiny experiment. It’s the quiet backbone of how the industry now plans campaigns, crafts social content, designs activations, and helps centres feel more alive.

Shopping centres today are competing with the endless, algorithm feeds of e-comms. At the same time, shoppers still want real places that feel human, local, and worth lingering in. That dual pressure is where smart AI shopping centre marketing makes the biggest difference.

We use AI to move faster, personalise deeper, and prove results more clearly — without ever losing the creative spark that makes both brand and experience uniquely memorable.

Turning the atrium into a living experience

The most exciting work happens when digital and physical meet. Static pop-ups are fading. In their place we’re designing responsive, hybrid retail marketing experiences that visitors actually interact with.

No shopping centre is the same. Traditional activations still have their place. But with AI, we are able to create generative art installations where shoppers co-create digital artwork or fashion lookbooks simply by moving or speaking. The results project live onto atrium screens. Spatial AR stations let people virtually style outfits from multiple fashion tenants or place furniture in a 3D room before they step into the store.

AI-powered gamification guides visitors through quieter hallways with treasure-hunt style challenges, rewarding exploration with personalised vouchers that lift average basket size.

These experiential AI activations do more than look impressive. They increase dwell time, highlight under-used zones, and give tenants measurable sales lift. For us, that’s the sweet spot: creativity that also performs, and most importantly, is measurable.

Clear proof, not just pretty pictures

Where centres once relied on delayed weekly foot-count reports, we can now use real-time data — linking our activations and communications directly to tenant turnover and longer visits.

When we sit down with centre management or property owners, we can show exactly how the work is performing.

Always human at heart

AI gives us speed and scale. It does not replace originality, creativity, judgment, empathy, or local knowledge. We still design CSI programmes by analysing hyper-local data and then talking to the community — whether that means supporting local initiatives, or building skills initiatives that are useful to the community.

The deeper we venture into the world of AI, the more it becomes apparent that no tool can replace the diverse individuals on our team who make sure the brand experience feels warm and rooted in the place itself.

What this means for the shopping centre brands we work with

Artificial intelligence isn’t replacing the creative soul of retail branding. It’s simply removing the friction that used to slow great ideas down. When we use AI for speed, scale, and insight — and keep human authenticity firmly in the driver’s seat — the results are sharper campaigns, more memorable activations, and places people want to spend more time in.

That’s the work we love doing: helping property owners and tenants turn GLA into destinations that matter. If you’re curious how AI could sharpen your next campaign or activation, drop us an email. We’d be happy to show you what’s possible.
